BLOCKCHAIN & CRYPTO | Bitcoin Pizza

When people talk about Bitcoin Pizza, they are referring to the first time Bitcoin was ever used to purchase a physical good in the real world. Before this, Bitcoin was just "magic internet money" that people traded back and forth for fun or testing and only crooks where using it.

The Bitcoin Pizza Story of 22 May 2010

A programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz wanted to prove that his Bitcoin had real-world utility. He posted on a forum (Bitcointalk) offering 10,000 BTC to anyone who would order him two large pizzas.

A student in the UK took him up on the offer. He used his credit card to order two pizzas from a Papa John’s in Florida and had them delivered to Laszlo’s house. Laszlo then transferred the 10,000 BTC.

Why it is Famous
  • The "Value" Today: At the time, those 10,000 BTC were worth about $25 - $41. Today, that amount of Bitcoin is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

  • Bitcoin Pizza Day: Every year on 22 May, the global crypto community celebrates "Bitcoin Pizza Day" by eating pizza.

  • The Milestone: It proved that Bitcoin could actually be "money", it just needed a merchant willing to accept it.

Note: While many sources frequently round the figure to $41, the precise math from the original 2010 exchange actually puts it slightly lower. The Breakdown:

  • The Price of the Pizzas: The two pizzas from Papa John's were purchased for roughly $25 to $30.

  • The Exchange Rate: At that specific moment in May 2010, the exchange rate used on the Bitcointalk forum was approximately 0.0025 cents per Bitcoin.

  • The Total: $10,000 \times 0.0025 = $25$.

The transaction value for those 10,000 BTC was close to $25 although the $41 figuring in later articles. Usually stemming from a slight price increase in Bitcoin that occurred shortly after the pizzas were delivered, or from including delivery fees and tips in the total "value" estimate.

Regardless of whether it was $25 or $41, it remains the most significant (and expensive) lunch order in history.
